Dr. Mehmet Oz visited the Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his anti-aging secrets to living longer. Dr. Oz, renowned cardiac physician and co-author to the book YOU: Staying Young contends that there is absolutely no reason why we don't have a chance to live to be 100. "Aging is not about avoiding disease," he says, " it is about living with vitality." Dr. Oz revealed that the greatest aging factor was stress. Reducing stress was therefore a huge concern.
Another aging factor is diet. Most of us consume a diet high in fat and sugar with little or no exercise to move it along. Add to that a lack of sleep and too much exposure to sun and you have all the components for premature aging. Dr. Oz tells us that "...the fountain of youth is inside us.... it's in our cells..." and that it is up to us to maintain a healthy environment for this to function properly.
The first exercise is breathing. Using your diaphragm can calm your nerves. Breathing exercises come in with meditation and physical exercise. Performing these can greatly reduce your stress level and the effects that has on your body. He suggests that if you cannot sit still long enough to meditate that you use other methods like Tai Chi. This combines meditation and focus with exercise. It is all part of the body and mind connection.
Certain foods aid in reducing stress and aging exceptionally well. Fruits and vegetables rich in anti-oxidants can boost your immune system and help fight negative stress. Some of these foods include blueberries, tomatoes, carrots and broccoli. Magnesium is known as the anti-stress mineral. You'll find this in whole grains, beets, and raisins. Foods high in vitamin C, such as oranges and grapefruit, and foods rich in potassium like bananas, avocados, and yogurt, help to lower blood pressure. All these can lower your stress levels that will significantly lessen the effects of aging on your body.
Reduce stress, heal the hurting heart, alleviate conflict and confusion in your life, eat right and stay active to reverse the affects of aging. Allow your cells to repair from the inside out. " Aging is not about avoiding breakage. Aging is about repairing what is broken." says Dr. Oz. " When you lose the ability to repair, you become frail." It is truly mind over matter.
